A HISTORY OF THE WINTERGREEN ORIGINAL FREE WILL BAPTIST CHURCH

     The Wintergreen OFWB Church was founded in 1882 on land that was given by Haywood Daugherty.  Rev. Robert F. Daugherty was the first pastor.  Among the charter members were Sidney Heath McCoy, Haywood and Susan Daugherty, Redden and Lizzie Wood, Hugh and Frances Heath, Fred and Betty Heath, Cullen Daugherty, and Robert and Carolina Daugherty.

     The church building was completed in autumn, and while some of the ladies were working in the church yard, they noticed the beautiful mossy green background; hence, the perfect name for the church, Wintergreen.  The original church was enlarged once, and in 1936 was moved 1/4 mile south of the original site.

     The present church building was started in 1936 at the original site alongside the original building, which was moved back to the original site upon completion of the present building.  In 1947 the first Sunday School rooms were added.  In the beginning Worship services were held once a month, and in March of 1951 the church moved to half time service and Worship was twice a month.

Several important dates and events are:

1955 - Fellowship Hall built.

1961 - Land given for the church cemetery by Mr. and Mrs. Lee Smith

1969 - More Sunday School rooms began to be built and completed in July 1970

1973 - The parsonage was built on land given by Hubert Daugherty

1976 - The Church was remodeled and enlarged complete with new heating, Air conditioning, and baptistry

1990 - The church parking lot was paved

1992 - New carpeting and heating system installed in the church

2004 - Playground equipment was donated for the children

     Known pastors include: M.C. Prescott, Rev G.C. Joyner, Rev. N.D. Wiggs, Sr., Rev. Sam Kennedy, Rev. E.E. Edwards, Rev. Phillip Rice, Rev. W.S. Burns, Rev. J.B. Starnes, Rev. James Lupton, Rev. Raymond Hardison (1965-1969), Rev. Rudy Shepard (1969-1975), Rev, Don Venable (1975-1977), Rev, Bobby Brown (1977-1981), Rev. Donald Walston (1981-1982), Rev. Mike Scott (1983-1998), Rev. Joe Myrick (April-Sept. 1998), and our present pastor is Rev. Neal Cox.
